Wednesday 21st October, 2020 was a horrible day for staff & management of Divine Grace Hospital Ltd located at 28B Seaside Road Obigbo River State. This very day an angry mob under the guise of End SARS protest invaded the hospital in the morning, beat up the security men, vandalized, looted and set it on fire.
Divine Grace Hospital has been providing comprehensive, qualitative, accessible and affordable healthcare services to the underprivileged and the under served citizens. It is the first government approved private hospital within Obigbo ( Oyigbo) and environs. This well equipped hospital with 30 staff has been providing these services for the past 16 years since there is no Government General hospital in the Local Government Area.
The medical director Dr Charles Nwabueze Ikeji a family physician said he got a distress call around 8:30 am of that ill fated day from his resident doctor as he was preparing for work that his hospital has been invaded by angry mob. He was informed that they came chanting war songs and brandishing dangerous weapons including guns, matchetes and axes
Dr Ikeji said his resident doctor told him the mob brought in a man who was alleged to have been fatally shot on the left side of the chest, dropped him on the floor and left . The man died before the doctor could administer first aid on him.
When the protesters heard that the man has died, they came back to unleash mayhem on the hospital complex.
The medical director described the attack as brutal, horrendous and unimaginable. He said he saw the perpetrators as misguided youths who infiltrated the ranks of the End SARS protesters to execute a pre-planned attack on his hospital.
He thanked God that no life was lost though some staff were assaulted and injured in the process.
Assessing the cost of the damage, Dr Ikeji said every unit of the hospital was vandalized, looted and burnt. Professional evaluation and quantity surveyor put the loss including the buildings, hospital equipment, furniture and other valuables at Fifty million naira ( N50,000,000).
Dr Ikeji said he is appealing to the Rivers State Governor, His Excellency Nyesom Wike to come to his aid as he is now jobless with his staff.
He said while praying God to see them through their travail, he is soliciting the help of friends, Old Boys Govt Sec School Owerri, corporate bodies, charity organizations, religious organizations and professional bodies to come to their aid.
The River State Police Force CID is currently handling the investigation.
