Contrary to Imo State Police Command’s report that Mr. Ignatius Obieze, an elder brother to Imo State Accountant General Sir Val Obieze was killed along Mgbidi-Akatta Road by kidnappers, and yet another conflicting report by Ozisa FM, Owerri to the effect that the victim was killed in St Joseph’s Catholic Church Okporo by suspected kidnappers, the said Mr. Ignatius Obieze was actually killed by hoodlums in Awo-Idemiri, Orsu Council Area of Imo State on Sunday 3rd January, 2021.
Speaking to Journalists in Owerri Wednesday, the visibly disturbed Imo Accountant General Sir Val Obieze who could not hold his emotion as a result of the sudden sad development said the rebuttal became necessary so as to put the record straight. According to him, his immediate elder brother was killed around 5-6pm on Sunday 3rd January, 2021 at Awo-Idemiri when he (Late Ignatius Obieze) and four other relations went to the community (Awo-Idemiri) to receive the corpse of one of their cousins that died in Lagos some days back.
“Our most senior elder brother and former lawmaker under Ex-Gov. Udenwa, Hon. Anthony Obieze died and was buried on 16th January 2020. On 3rd of January this new year, 2021, we had a memorial service in his honour at St Patrick’s Catholic Parish Ihitte-Akata, Oru East L.G.A. After the memorial thanksgiving mass essentially put together to appreciate God for His grace throughout the mourning period, we retired to late Hon. Obieze’s house with some priests to bless the grave; Later, most of us retired to my house for entertainment. By evening that same Sunday, my immediate elder brother Ignatius Obieze and four other cousins in a Hilux Van left for Awo-Idemiri to possibly recieve the corpse of one of our relations married in Orsu-Ihiteukwa who died in Lagos so that the corpse could be deposited in a morgue.
At Awo-Idemiri, my brother who was full of life parked by the roadside with four others to wait for the corpse of our late sister. After some minutes, about 5-6pm, some hoodlums or thugs emerged from nowhere and ordered all the occupants of the Hilux to lie down including my brother and hit all of them initially with cutlasses.
My brother and the four persons complied and lied down. After some minutes, they heard some gun shots and the Hilux Van driven away by the hoodlums. When the other four persons got up from the floor, they only saw my brother Ignatius Obieze in the pool of his blood, having being shot dead by the hoodlums who also made away with his Hilux Van”.
The Accountant General specifically faulted the Police report indicating that his late brother was killed around Mgbidi-Akatta road by suspected kidnappers and a news report on Ozisa FM Owerri insinuating that he was killed in the premises of St Joseph’s Catholic Church Okporo-Orlu where some suspected kidnappers had attempted whisking away one business mogul, Valentine Ibenye-Ugbala but did not succeed.
Obieze said the assassins had on that same day, they killed his brother suspectedly murdered a business man from Ideato around Ihiala, Anambra.
Sir. Obieze also used the medium to debunk the insinuation that his late elder brother was a billionaire.
“My brother was an ordinary staff of NNPC Warri and was never a billionaire. His vehicle (Hilux) was later tracked and recovered by some soldiers with 34 Field Artillery Brigade Obinze a day or two days after the gory incident”.
