AFAN sets up committees to organise first Farmers Day/General Assembly in Imo

Chairman All Farmers Association of Nigeria-AFAN Imo State Chapter Dr Vitus Ayo Enwerem last Thursday restated the need for government at all levels to look the way of farmers as the surest route to ensure food sufficiency and security in Nigeria.

Enwerem a seasoned farmer and strategic leader in the agricultural sector said farmers are too many in Nigeria with huge potentials that could turn “our fortunes around” however noted that these potentials and their consequential benefits have not been tapped fully by the drivers of government in the Africa’s most populous country.

He stated this at the second meeting of the Planning Committee charged with the responsibility of organizing the first ever Imo Famers General Assembly otherwise known as Farmers Day. The AFAN chair urged the central planning committee and the sub committees to be more than committed in ensuring that the event was a grand success. Dr Ayo Enwerem assured the planning committee of his Excos’ support but advised them to source for funds to ensure that the occasion was well publicized and hosted.

He promised to work hard on his own part to see that government was part and parcel of the historic occasion, even as he expressed hope that with the caliber of men and women assembled to organize the General Assembly, it was already a success.

The first Deputy National Chairman of AFAN, Rev C.U Iwu who was present at the meeting encouraged farmers to use this year’s farming season to plant new crops and seedlings that will be economically beneficial to them during harvest, and yet add value to the food supply chain in Nigeria. He said the Farmers Day will afford farmers, government and indeed Imolites the roundtable needed to draw the best policies aimed at fighting hunger and food insufficiency, even as he assured of his support for the realization of the project.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the Imo Farmers Day, Amb Mrs Ijeoma Nwachukwu had earlier vowed to make the event the best not only in Imo and Southeast but in the entire Nigeria. She encouraged chairmen and members of various sub committees to selflessly work towards making the ceremony grand and epochal. Mrs Nwachukwu announced that the ceremony would feature among other things exhibition, lectures, road show, award of honors and communiqué.

The Secretary of the Central Planning Committee Mr. Wilson Ezuma was at the meeting to take records and later announced Chairmen and members of the sub committees for the event.

While the Contact/Mobilization sub-committee is headed by Mr Lordes Mbamara, two sub-committees viz Media/Publicity and Fund-Raising are chaired by the Publisher of Nigerian Newsguide Mr Chidi Emeagi. Other sub committees and their chairmen include those of Exhibition headed by Dr. Chinedu Apolo Uchewuako, Welfare chaired by Mrs Ifeoma Emeka-Ejiofor as well as Works/Security manned by Mr Sam Jato Odumanya.
