Be courageous and report, when faced with challenges of abuse – Women advised

By Stanley Okehie

Women all over the world have been charged to be courageous and outspoken when faced with challenges of abuse. Imo State Coordinator of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mrs.

Ukachi Uka gave the charge weekend while addressing Udokamma Women Association, Obinze Ancient Kingdom. Ukachi who said the Commission investigates and monitors all alleged cases of human rights violations in Nigeria, listed domestic violence and some obnoxious traditional practices as major challenges confronting a present day Nigerian woman and encouraged women to spare no efforts at reporting such abuses to the nearest NHRC office.

“Everybody is created equal and freedom is also equal, the dignity of your human person must be respected”, Ukachi told the women, while describing the Commission as the voice of the voiceless and defender of the defenseless.

The State Coordinator regretted that abuse against women spiked since after Coronavirus lockdown, and commended Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for their genuine efforts in the protection and promotion of human rights. She was particularly grateful to Alliance for Africa (AFA) – a non-governmental organization, that is, according to Ukachi, doing marvelous jobs with regards to ending violence against women and girls in Imo State.

She enjoined women, especially rape victims not to feel ashamed to report such case and other forms of abuse to the Commission’s office.“I want to encourage you to be bold and speak out, the Commission is solidly behind you”, Ukachi assured, while urging women to always approach the commission to report any form of abuse, maintaining that the commission would be glad to assist them pro bono.
